If you're going to go to a "zoo," this is the kind to go to. I'm guilty - like most Americans - of going to zoos, circuses, and petting zoos while growing up. It seems to make sense... we love animals - so go adore them at the zoo. Not until growing up and putting things into perspective did I realize how contradictive and inhumane they really are. However, The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Co is a campaign I can support. These animals were all born in captivity for the purpose of entertainment or house pets (sick people, real sick). Law enforcement and animal welfare agencies throughout the United States, as well as other countries, rescued all of the animals at the sanctuary and placed them here where they can receive healthy and "normal" lives.. at least given their circumstances. I really want to write this post to help raise awareness about the sanctuary...
The Wild Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit organization running solely off of donations, grants & fundraising events. The workers there are all volunteers (and very friendly I might add) & the animals are given large acreage, natural habitats to roam freely.
It was basically nap time during my visit...
Dinner time
This is meat-eating I can understand and respect
And then nap time again...
Even the birds love the habitat. They are expanding the sanctuary now because unfortunately, the demand is there. Hopefully with awareness of the issue, people will realize how inhumane it is to raise these animals as pets or use them for entertainment. I know we all love animals, however we need to be sure we are putting their well-being over all else.
